this has been on the easel forever and a day...
i wanted to capture the stage of life of this woman... that precarious mid-twenties stage leaving behind a childhood and facing adulthood.... of course it is my interpretation of a precious moment:) r.
on another note i recently sold study of dreams xii (man wearing hat and trench coat) to a brilliant artist and fellow blogger Karen Mathison Schmidt Check out her paintings: the energy and effective use of colour is sublime!
Truly beautiful work. I LOVE her expression. :) And congrats on the sale too.
ReplyDeleteyes i do see two sides of this woman
ReplyDeletethe face is beautiful yet especially the mouth shows something dark or some insecurity...anyway it is well painted especially the hair...
Whoa - this is stunning painting. My immediate reaction was to love it and after some long contemplation, I still love it. This is truly a work of art!!!
ReplyDeleteRahina, thank you for your kind intro ...
ReplyDeleteI've been waiting on the edge of my seat to see this next one from you and it was SO worth the wait! This is absolutely stunning. And that precious, scary threshold leading from teenage girl to adult woman ... gracious, I think you nailed it, sister! Whether you like to admit it or not, I believe you are well on your way to becoming a SUPERB portraitist. Onward and upward!
Rahina, Your'e back!
ReplyDeleteAnd with a great one...
The depth and edge control here is fresh and unforced.
The woman anxious and maybe a touch apprehensive about her future, but in that youthful exuberant manner we all have at that age.
And congrats on your sale!
thank you Crystal for your thoughts on this. appreciate it.
ReplyDeletethank you rob... the insecurity in the mouth is probably my insecurity showing through as i painted it;)
Bill, is that comment from you? why are you being nice? you don't do nice... well i guess you kinda like this one;)
Karen, thank you for your thoughts on this one. listening to friends in this age group, i remembered my own anxieties... as for me and my portraits, i have a few ideas in the pipeline ....i think my anxiety is that when i start a painting i don't know if this one is going to land on the canvas heap in the corner of my room... it is precarious this making of art;) though i guess as i start identifying more areas of my process, i will have the confidence to go with them and then put more thought into undiscovered areas:)
Yes, David, back but i thought i'd never get a painting on the blog again. this one has been so long in the making and a couple of destroyed canvases on the same subject :))
however, i couldn't put it here until it stopped nagging me.
let's see.. my paintings sometimes start talking after they have been up a few weeks;)
appreciate your thoughts on this!
Rahina,
ReplyDeleteWelcome back. And what an outstanding portrait to return with. It's a beautiful and thoughtful work which displays your abundant talents.
Congratulations on the sale, too.
Thanks for brightening our day with this stunning work.
Sincerely,
Gary.
Congratulations on the sale Rahina. I had a look at Karen's blog and love her cat paintings. Your painting is very much in the shadows, a thoughtful quiet time in one's youth.
ReplyDeletei think you captured the moment you wanted. beautiful mood and light.
ReplyDeleteRahina, I agree with all of the above comments. This portrait is a grand slam. Your skills are building and building and I am so proud of you! There is no end to what you can do.
ReplyDeleteThank you Gary... yes it has been a long time since I posted, a result of the day job and then dealing with some subliminal learning which seems to have taken place while i wasn't painting. new questions and reflections seemed to help.
ReplyDeletethank you Caroline, her work is delightful and i'm glad you saw what you did in this painting.
thank you Liz, it is that fleeting moment carved into paint that i think we hanker after as artists:)
thank you Nicki, you are such a boost to my confidence! as for ends... i don't see them as they alll seem so far away and there is so much to achieve;) however, if anything my analysis of paint is a little better than it used to be.... some method in the madness now;)
A strong yet sensitive and nuanced poprtrait, Rahina. It captures the vitality of youth in those bright clear eyes looking forward, yet there is a hint of vulnerability (or is it self-doubt?) around the mouth. Fantastic.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the sale. And thank you so for Karen's blog address. Yes, just as you say - sublime work.
This is so beautiful, Rahina! Love the dramatic lighting and the shadow of her hair.
ReplyDeleteThis is very well done. I think you captured the woman's age and place in her life beautifully
ReplyDeletethank you Harry... it is always so useful to get other artists perceptions to one's paintings: firstly they know the process and see the techniques as well as the human journey... i am delving deeper into the old masters recently and it is like entering aladdin's cave and pandora's box in one.
ReplyDeletethank you Gwen, that shadow was such a struggle to make it a shadow and not a hair by balancing the paint according to the skin tone... the fact that you noted it makes it all the more worthwhile.
thank you Mary, i am glad that it has come through and it appeals to you.
this is just marvelous Rahina. I think you accomplished what you set out to do.
ReplyDeleteA wonderful portrait, I could look at this for hours.
ReplyDeleteHi Rahina,
ReplyDeleteMe again. I just wanted to say how much I like the new look. Of course, I had no problems with the prior version, but this is particularly striking.
Sincerely,
Gary.
The woman looks great! I like it! Great work on the light and shadow aspects! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThanks Gary, appreciate your thoughts on this:)
ReplyDeleteThanks Ben for your thoughts and your visit... i'm glad it captures your interest:)
Hi Gary, as you can see i have changed the design of my website back to the old version... it became too noisy to my eyes and the simple white seems to reflect something that i like:)
Hi oil painting workshop.... i am not sure who left the comment... Daniel Edmondson was the only name i saw on the site and wow what wonderful paintings!!! thank you for your thoughts and your visit... appreciate it:)
Beautiful portrait study. The light and shadows are incredible.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the sale Rahina. Beautiful study of this pretty lady, the lighting is wonderful and captures the mood perfectly.
ReplyDeletethank you Michelle, i appreciate your visit and your thoughts on this painting:)
ReplyDeletethank you Sam, i'm still trying to get that particular atmosphere in my paintings and good luck with your two entries to the show ... they are brilliant and really capture the animals' personality or animality???;)
Wow, this is lovely. I can see the conflicting emotions flickering across her face, her mouth, her eyes.
ReplyDeleteI really do like this painting :-)
ReplyDeleteTonally I think this is your best painting yet, very subtle (even gentle) and well observed. You have modelled the features so well and the shadow areas with their reflected light have form and weight.
Well done you!!!!!!
thank you Donald, it is always good to hear how others respond to a painting:)
ReplyDeletethank you Paul, good to know and thank you for taking time to relate your thoughts on this in specific detail:)
wonderful work!
ReplyDeletethank you Mikko:)
